Isaac Pettijohn diary, 1847-1848.

Record of overland journey from Caple's Landing, Mo., to Oregon via Fort Bridger and the Barlow Road; winter in Willamette Valley and return to Missouri via Applegate and Greenwood Cutoffs and Old Fort Kearny. Mentions Mormon pioneers, meeting Gen. Kearny (with Col. Fremont under guard), Whitman Massacre and Cayuse War, Mormon ferries at the Green and Platte Rivers, wagons met on return journey, and construction of New Fort Kearny. Miscellaneous later memoranda and accounts scattered through balance of volume (some in different handwritings) Volume ends with "List of letters to be carried to the states" by Pettijohn. Includes printed excerpts of the diary published in: Social Studies Bulletin, Jan. 1959, and biographical notes (housed in portfolio with call number BANC MSS P-A 336 B)
